Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the average length of stay at Outback?
Outback runs on a flexible length of stay with the average being 7-8 weeks.
- What are Outback's outcomes?
Outback feels it is extremely important to understand the long-term effects of our program on our students. Through ongoing relationships with after-care programs, referring professionals, and families we have found that Outback's approach has had a tremendous affect on our student's lives. We are proud of our outcomes and the progress that families make as they begin the process of healing and change.
- What is the cost to send my son/daughter to Outback?
Outback has a one time enrollment fee of $2000, and a $50 gear shipment fee at the end of the students stay. This price covers all gear and admissions fees. Please call for our daily rate. A short sports physical by the Outback Medical Director is not included in costs.
- Will my insurance cover the costs of sending my child to Outback?
Although Outback does not work directly with insurance companies many parents have been successful in getting a portion, if not all, of the costs reimbursed through their insurance company. Upon completion at Outback, we can break down all therapeutic costs, which include individual therapy weekly, group therapy twice weekly, and group processing daily. In addition, we will break down admissions fees, gear fees and residential fees if requested.
- Does Outback offer financing?
Yes! Outback has arranged financing options through Clark Behavioral Health Financing for those who qualify. Please contact our admissions director for specific details regarding application and processing. - Can my child receive academic credit during their stay?
Yes! Outback has an educational component that is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. This gives our students the opportunity to continue their academic progress while receiving the intensive therapeutic experience of our wilderness program. Please see our Academic Page for more details.
- Will my child be involved with really tough kids?
Outback's student profile works with adolescents 13-17 years old with mild to moderate behavioral issues. We do not work with extreme cases such as gang related issues, sex offenders, students that are actively suicidal, etc. See our student profile.
- How does Outback work with difficult kids?
The Outback philosophy is a strength based model which focuses on building strong relationships of trust, supporting the child through the process of change instead of "breaking them down" to build them up again. This approach allows the clinical team to work out specific structures, assignments, and activities to understand, assess and help the student make significant progress during his or her stay.
- Where is Outback located?
Outback's field offices are located in Lehi, UT - about 1/2 hour's drive south of Salt Lake City. The "field" is located in the Sheeprock and Simpson mountain ranges, about 1 hour's drive to the southwest of Outback's field offices.
- How do you determine the length of stay?
Outback therapists work closely with parents and referring professionals to determine treatment goals, plans and review progress. The students length of stay is ultimately determined by this "treatment team" with the parents making final decisions through the process.
- When can I admit my child?
Outback works on a continuous flow basis with admissions and discharges happening regularly. This creates a positive peer culture and allows students to become mentors to "new-comers" in the group. Outback prefers to admit students Monday through Friday. Weekend admits can be arranged, but check with your Outback admissions counselor for details. Flights should arrive at the Salt Lake City Airport by 3:00 p.m. with a facility admission cut off time of 6:00 p.m. All students arriving outside of those timeframes will be placed at the Safe House facility for the night and admission will occur the following morning. Please contact our admissions director if special arrangements need to be made.
- What does my child need to bring?
All clothing and necessary gear will be issued to the students. Parents are asked to supply only the following:- Prescription Medication (1 month supply)
- Prescription glasses (no contacts if at all possible)
- Retainers with their cases
- Disposable cameras (in their original packaging)
- When will I hear from Outback regarding my son/daughter?
As a parent, you will receive a call from Outback when your son/daughter arrives to our offices. At that time you will receive the information to contact the therapist assigned to your family and will schedule with them a time for your weekly update phone calls. These calls take place each Wednesday and are 30 - 45 minutes in length.
